Basic Formation Information
The Ellenburger Group of the Permian Basin is part of a Lower Ordovician carbonate platform sequence that covers a large area of the United States. It is well known for being one of the largest shallow- water carbonate platforms in the geologic record (covering thousands of square miles and as much as 500 mi wide in West Texas), with its widespread hydrocarbon production. Hydrocarbon production ranges from as shallow as 856 ft in West Era field in Cooke County, Texas, to as deep as 25,735 ft in McComb field in Pecos County, Texas.
