A group of special Colorado residents are ticked off. Who are these upset folks? They are mineral rights holders. As anti-fracking bans are still on some local municipal ballots this November, these residents are saying – “if you’re not going to allow our assets to be mined, then we’ll sue you for the money we would have received”. I don’t blame them. Mineral rights holders have long been protected in most states for having a priority – even over landowners – to be able to extract the minerals they own. These fracking bans in oil-friendly states like Colorado are going to end up in court. You can count on it. The best model is when communities and our industry work together to safely and responsibly extract the resource that fuels this great land.
