Today’s report is a tribute to a giant in our industry, who has fallen silent. Christophe de Margerie was the charismatic CEO of France’s oil giant, Total. He was tragically killed in Moscow, when a drunken snowplow operator pulled in front of his jet on takeoff. He was only 63. He was brilliant. His jovial presence filled any room, and his big, silver, bushy mustache was unmistakable.
While I may not have agreed with all of his politics, he did a remarkable job building Total, amidst great difficulty. France hates oil and gas development, yet Christophe forged on. He explored new opportunities and was a true leader. I’ll miss seeing him at future conferences.
Christophe, I salute you. Rest in peace my friend.
